The federal government announced plans to expand biometrics collection in Labrador, with operations set to begin in January 2027. This initiative will allow individuals seeking immigration services in Labrador to have their biometrics collected locally.

Biometrics for immigration applications include an individual's photograph and fingerprints. These requirements apply to applications for temporary residence and permanent residence, and to renewals of PR cards for individuals previously age exempt.

When the new site is operational, individuals seeking immigration services in Labrador will be able to have their biometrics collected in Happy Valley-Goose Bay. Immigration Minister Lena Diab announced the opening at a press conference in St. John's on September 29, 2026.

Happy Valley-Goose Bay is the largest population centre in Labrador, with 8,040 residents reported in the 2021 Census. Many individuals currently travel to St. John's, Newfoundland, a journey of 900km by air or 1600km by car and ferry from Happy Valley-Goose Bay.

The opening of this new biometrics site will significantly reduce the need for long distance travel for Labrador residents seeking immigration services. Operations for the new biometrics site are scheduled to begin in January 2027.
